Over the first few days of term your child will be given a reading book and a reading record. Please try to read with your child as often as you can as it really does help them. Please add a note in the reading record to say you have done this and add any comment about their reading. For example ' We discussed the meaning of migrate' or ' Tom managed to read fluently and enjoyed the subject.' As part of reading with your child, please ask them questions about the content of the book to make sure they can understand the text as well as decode the words. Reading books can be changed in school and the children will be asked to do this as part of their growing independence in year 2.
It is very important that children learn to spell some words fluently and without using their phonics skills. These words are called common exception words and the documents below list those that children should be expected to spell correctly in year 1 and in year 2. These would be great to practise at home with your child. We will add weekly spellings to google classroom so please work with your child to practise spelling them and using them in sentences. Don't forget to 'turn in' the work so it is returned to the class teacher who will look at it.
Maths homework will be set weekly and also posted on google classroom for you to work through with your child. It will support the learning we will have been doing in class. There will be a deadline for you to submit it by and it will be updated weekly.
Throughout the year extra homework may be added for you to complete as part of the wider curriculum. Your class teacher will let the children know about this and it may be set on google classroom or in the case of computing on the purple mash website. Your child's login for purple mash will be sent home for you to use securely at home at the beginning of the Autumn Term.
