Welcome Year 4s

to Swallow's Class
Autumn 2019

Creative Curriculum – The children will be looking into the Romans. To begin we focus on where the Romans were from, how they invaded and why they invaded along with key dates. We will be creating timelines of dates within history, key events and people from the Roman era and looking at mosaics and how the Romans presented their artwork and stories.

ENGLISH - In English the children will be focusing upon recounts, and different types and styles of literature. We will be looking at how to decipher key parts of text and finding the 5 W's within literature. We will have daily guided reading sessions focusing on questioning from specific books, either as a class read and within smaller groups to support each students learning and reading.

We will continue to have spelling sessions regularly which will be followed up through homework.  The children are expected to read on a daily basis using books that they have chosen to read for enjoyment, please support your child by sharing their chosen book with them every night and encourage them to change their books and bring their reading records in to be checked by us.

MATHS - During Maths the children will be following the Mathematical Framework which will cover using all four operations, as well as Number, Place and Value, Addition and Subraction. Keep practising those multiplication tables too!

R.E - During these sessions children will be exploring Christianity by looking at and studying texts from the bible.  Through creative activities the children will discover how these texts can help us understand Christianity today.

P.E – children should not be wearing any jewellery to school other than a watch and/ or stud earrings, both of which will need to be removed for P.E. lessons by your child. If children are unable to remove their earrings please can they remove them at home on P.E days. We are not permitted to remove a child’s earrings or apply the tape; the children need to be able to do this independently. Long hair must be tied back.

PE kits need to be in on Tuesdays and Fridays please.  As we are outside as much as possible they will need to bring appropriate clothing and a change of footwear.

SCIENCE - In Science the children will be exploring Teeth and Electricity. They will explore different types, shapes and sizes of teeth, both human and animals. And how electricity works. We will be completing both practical experiments and how to write up the results and methods correctly.

HOMEWORK - The children will continue to use the Homework Book for;

  • Writing out of sentences using their spelling words. (Spellings will be given out on a Wednesday and the children will be tested each wednesday).
  • There will be an English homework and a Maths homework as well as times table practice each week (times tables will be tested each monday).
