Welcome to Duckling Class!
Class Teacher: Miss Dickenson
First, I wish to give you a warm welcome to Year 1 at St John’s. I am excited to work with you and your child over the next year. The jump from Reception to the Year 1 curriculum can be daunting at first, but please do rest assured that myself and the Year 1 team will do our best to make your child feel safe and secure at school.
Just some housekeeping:
Reading: You child will soon receive a Reading Journal and a reading book from the school. These need to come into school everyday with your child. The school do have book bags available to purchase if needed. Please read with your child each night and write a comment into the journal afterwards. You should read with your child a minimum of three times a week.
Once three comments have been recorded into the Reading Journal, your child will receive a new reading book. We would like the book to be re-read at least three times, as this will build up your child’s reading fluency. Your comments do not have to be long, something as simple as the title of the book and “They read the whole book to me”, is perfect. If you would like to add more detail, please do so.
Homework: Your child will receive a piece of maths and English based homework most weeks. This will be given out on the Friday and should be sent back into school by Thursday the following week. The activities given will always reflect what we have been learning about at school.
PE: Our PE day this term is a Monday. This term we will be doing swimming lessons. Please see the attached letter for more information regarding this.
Lost Items: Please make sure that everything your child brings into school has their name clearly marked on them. Children are great at losing things. If you have written their name on the label in biro, please do keep checking throughout the year that it has not faded off in the wash.
If you have any questions and concerns, please contact the school office, who will be able to pass on the message to me.
