Spring term 2018

We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas break and would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!
With the start of the new term, we have lots of exciting learning to look forward to. We are excited about embarking on a new topic this half term –Volcanoes! This topic will seep into many aspects of the children's learning and hopefully again inspire their creativity. As always, the topic will start off with a bit of excitement and drama!

We are starting to see more and more children who are showing a great attitude to learning and are ready to make good choices.

Term starts with another visit to place value, an essential topic which underpins a lot of maths. We will then apply this learning to our next topic – addition and subtraction! Following on from this, we will then start a more practical topic, mass and capacity, which will obviously involve a lot of measuring! We will then finish the half term with a visit to multiplication and division. Maths as always will creep into other curriculum subjects, especially science and computing. It is extremely important you help to support your children’s learning through regular times table practise as these number facts are so useful in many different areas of maths learning.

In English we will start the term with a visit to the world of fables and during our learning journey we will experience fables from a variety of sources including Aesop. Grammar will form an important part of all our creative work as we move onto looking at performance and choral poetry before half term.

The children are expected to read at home on a daily basis using books that they have chosen to read for enjoyment, from our reading corner. Please support your child by sharing their chosen book with them every night and encourage them to change their books regularly. Over the next half term we are going to continue our handwriting drive as this seems to be going well. We are looking to improve overall standards of presentation, concentrating on letter shapes and joins in particular.

Other subjects

Art and DT - As part of our Volcano topic the children will have great fun modelling with materials such as modrock and papermache over a frame as well as creating textures in art.
Music - We will be enjoying a music week where we will enjoy different aspects of our main topic through music making and listening as well as contributing a large part of the singing in our Year 3 / 4 performance.
Science - Linking with our topic on Volcanoes we will be learning about rocks and soils.

RE – In RE we will be exploring the idea of incarnation.

P.E – The children will be learning about hand apparatus and experiencing activities involving striking and fielding. Please note Ravens PE lessons will be on Wednesday and Friday.

Our school policy states that all children must have their hair tied back for PE and they must remove ALL jewellery. Earrings should be removed at home before school on a PE day or the children must be able to remove their earrings independently at school.

Both spellings and maths homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be returned for a spelling test every Friday. Times tables will be tested on a Wednesday.
