Spring term 2019

We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas break and are fully refreshed for the new year. We are looking forward to seeing a continuation of good learning behaviour and a kind and caring attitude towards eachother.

We have lots of exciting learning to look forward to! We will kick off this term with ‘Blow your top’, a brilliant geographical topic based on volcanoes. This topic will seep into many aspects of the children's learning and hopefully again inspire their creativity. As always, the topic will start off with a bit of excitement and drama, starting off on the first day back with a Wow day!

Maths

The term starts with another important visit to place value, a topic which underpins many aspects of learning in maths. Next we will explore the world of measures including mass, and capacity and volume. We will finish off the half term with a visit to multiplication and division. Maths as always will creep into other curriculum subjects, especially science and computing. It is extremely important you help to support your children’s learning through regular times table practise as these number facts are so useful in many different areas of maths learning. The Ravens will have a weekly session on a Tuesday where they will be tested on their focus times table as well as have opportunities to sharpen up their skills.

English

Our big focus in English this half term is Haiku poetry and playscripts. There will be a strong link to our topic ‘Volcanoes’ with both. The year group will be preparing playscripts ready to perform at Burwell, the year 3/4 residential just before half term.

The children are expected to read at home on a daily basis using books that they have chosen to read for enjoyment. Please support your child by sharing their chosen book with them every night and encourage them to change their books in the school library. Over the next half term we are going to continue our handwriting drive as this seems to be going well. We are looking to improve overall standards of presentation, concentrating on letter shapes and joins in particular. The children will hopefully be practising handwriting every day in class.

Other subjects

Art and DT – During our wow experience, the children will be hands on creating their very own volcano using construction materials including Modroc.

Science – Whilst we study volcanoes, we will be looking into rocks and soils in order to gain a full understanding of how volcanoes are formed.

RE – In RE we will be exploring the idea of Incarnation.

P.E – We will be starting off the term with a interclass competition using the golf skills we acquired last term. We will then create a dance spectacle based on a volcanic eruption.

Please note Raven PE lessons will be on Tuesday and Wednesday

For all P.E activities children should remove watches and/ or stud earrings for P.E. lessons. Studded earrings should be removed on PE days unless children are able to remove them themselves. If removing earrings at school, please provide them with a suitable container to store them in. Long hair must be tied back.

Maths homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be returned on Thursdays. Times tables will be set and tested on a Tuesday.
Spelling homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be returned on the following Friday. The children will be tested on their spellings on Friday.
